Ireland Ranks 3rd in Searching for ‘Game of Thrones’ as Viewing Records are Smashed Worldwide

Screen Shot 2017-07-19 at 12.16.20A record breaking 23 million people in the UK and US tuned in to watch the first new episode of Game of Thrones. That’s a 50% uplift in some places on last year. Historically, however, estimates of illegal views of the series versus legal was at a ratio of 7:9… so, the real figure is probably at least 41 million. With Ireland ranking 3rd for search interest in the series after Kazakhstan and Russia, you have to wonder, are we the worst offenders for illegal downloads?! At least 1.3 million of us are at it after all. The constant media research since the launch of the iPhone in 2007 unequivocally proves Ireland’s tendency for early adoption when it comes to new trends and tech but little to none has gone into looking at illegal downloading and streaming. I guess this trend is a combination of our techy prowess and our ‘If-you-can-get-away-with-it-sure-look-chancers-are-heroes’ mindset? I bet the Germans have a word for that…

In behavioural economic terms, humans decide how much to ‘cheat’ in life (such as illegally downloading) based on a combination of risk assessment (eh, ‘zero’) and how the behaviour affects our perception of ourselves in the immediate (Irish mentality = ‘hero’).

Perhaps it’s time to role out this old gem again…
